The pre-school period is crucial for a successful student life and personal development. Research also shows that children who are educated in its widespread use in pre-school, ie kindergarten, are more successful in the future. Well, what is the most suitable age for kindergarten, what should be the education given during this period? Professor of the Department of Basic Education, Faculty of Education, Istanbul Kaltur University. Faculty member Sevkan Yager Guder answered questions about the subject:
Guidelines for parents
– Why is pre-school education important?
The pre-school period is a complex period where the child’s cognitive, social, emotional, motor development and self-care skills are developed. From a cognitive point of view, for example, preschool is the period when the rate of brain development and synaptic connection is most intense and rapid. For this reason, it is important that the environment given to the child is rich and worthy. This rich and deserving environment can be provided in pre-school learning environment. Between the ages of 2 and 2.5, children need more socialization as their language skills increase and there is a stage of independence. For this reason, pre-school learning classes are an environment where children can interact with their peers and acquire many skills such as sharing, helping and collaborating. Again, in terms of motor development, activities like cutting, sticking, painting, knotting are often done in pre-school education. This type of activity supports the development of small and large muscles in children. Here, children gain life experiences such as eating and dressing themselves and these experiences positively affect the development of the child’s personality. On the other hand, through pre-school education children can recognize themselves, express themselves, ask questions, develop skills. These are important in shaping what the child will look like in the future. There are studies that show that those who take pre-school education are more successful in the future. It is also known that they are more ready to transfer to primary school and have an easier transition period. It guides parents on a worthy parent-child relationship. Pre-school education is an important force in enabling children with different disabilities to start primary school on a more equal level with their peers.
– At what age should he be seen at school?
Children up to the age of 2-2.5 years can stay in the home environment if there is someone at home to take care of them. However, after 36 months, they must be directed to a pre-school educational institution. Pre-primary education should be at least 2 years, one year before starting primary school is compulsory.
Game-based learning is important
– What kind of training?
First, the quality of teacher education, the quality of teaching activities, and the physical condition of the learning environment are important. The education given to children during this period should be on a basis that enhances their creativity, enables them to question and critique and ensures that they become citizens who are sensitive and respectful of themselves and the diversity of all elements of nature. This content can be provided with game-based learning, which is the best way for the child to express himself. In recent years, we have noticed that preschool educational institutions have moved away from the ground of play.
In the name of primary school preparation or school adaptation studies, primary school 1st and 2nd classes should be converted into play-based education; In contrast, master classes have moved away from the game. However, children aged 0-8 years, which we call childhood, try, see, touch and learn more through play. In our country, kindergartens have mostly academic based activities and these activities are done through paper and pencil at the desk and not through games. It plays an important role in the child’s negative attitude towards school.
‘Your Child Should Be Happy’
– What should kindergarten look like?
It is important for children to be happy at all levels of education. First, it is important to note that other children who go to school are happier. It is important that the school is physically fit for the child’s development. For example, some kindergartens do not have a garden, where outdoor activities are very important. There should be a garden where children can touch the ground, observe the surroundings and have a variety of plants and animals. On the other hand, it should be a horizontally structured school with attractive and rich materials, with adequate qualification of light and heat. Children and families should have easy access to schools. The educational background of the teachers is also important. In many institutions, those who are not graduates of the undergraduate program of pre-school teaching are recruited. This negatively affects the quality of education.
72 months is ideal for starting elementary school
In addition to choosing a school, the age of starting school is also an important factor in a child’s success and love for school. Sevkan Yager Guder mentions that the most important criterion for starting primary school is the level of development of the child.
“Academic and socio-emotional readiness of the child is an important factor,” says Gooder, and provides the following information:
“For example, understanding and applying given instructions, language and concept development, self-care skills such as going to the toilet alone, washing hands, eating without assistance, understanding and applying social rules such as waiting in line and controlling large muscles are important. Pre-school education can also be an important factor in school preparation because we already support these skills through pre-school education. ” “If you have to give your age, this month is definitely not before the age of 66, but ideally 72 months and beyond,” Gooder said.
